Volyn and Karpaty reach semifinals

Volyn, the club of Vance Sikov and Dusan Savic, and Karpaty, the team of Martin Bogatinov, both advanced to the semifinals of the Ukrainian Cup.

Both clubs have struggled in league play but managed to reach the semifinals of the domestic cup.  Volyn defeated Arsenal Kyiv 0:1 on the road after 120 minutes, while Karpaty got past Chornomorets 2:1 with Bogatinov returning as the starting keeper for the winning side.

Volyn was still tied at 0:0 with Arsenal Kyiv after 90 minutes so the match went into extra time.  Arsenal Kyiv missed a penalty in the 61st minute which was the best opportunity during regulation.  In extra time, just before the conclusion of the first 15 minute period, Volyn striker Maicon scored with a nice chip over the opposing keeper which proved to be the game winner to propel his club to the semifinals.  Sikov played the entire game for Volyn at right CB while Dusan Savic also got the start and played until the 120th minute when he was substituted by defender Jan Maslo.

Meanwhile, Martin Bogatinov returned as the starting keeper for Karpaty in their game against Chornomorets.  Bogatinov played from the start and conceded one goal in the 83rd minute but Karpaty celebrated a 2:1 victory to advance to the next round of the Ukrainian Cup.  Karpaty was helped by the fact that Chornomorets finished the game with 9 players.

Besides Volyn and Karpaty, the other two teams that made it to the semifinals include Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalurh Donetsk.  Volyn and Karpaty are actually scheduled to face one another in Round 27 of the league season this upcoming Monday.
