Four quarter-finalists are already known after the conclusion of the second day in the Maso Cup.
Co-hosts Rockdale impressively won its group with three wins, in which they scored nine goals and conceded none. As the only group that concluded this far, Wollongong finished in second place, earning a place in the knock-out. Arncliffe, with one win, will hope to be among the best two of all the other teams (that did not finish first or second in their groups), but will have to wait for day 3 to find out their fate. The one thing clear is that Newcastle Suns has definitely been eliminated.
Cringila has been the surprise of the tournament as they managed to gather 7 points to book a place in the quarter-finals. They played a 1:1 draw with co-hosts Bankstown, preventing them to secure their place after two games. Instead, Bankstown will now have to at least draw Shell Cove in a match-up that will determine the remaining quarter-final place from Group B.
Group C plays their last round of matches tomorrow, but holders Altona Magic have already qualified after winning their first two games. Broadmeadow seems in the best position to proceed as the second placed team (have 4 points), but in the last and decisive game they face Altona. Will the already qualified Altona give their best or will they decide to rest some players for the quarter-finals? That will go a long way in determining that result. Debutants Sunshine Lions have slim chances as they have to beat Queanbeyan City with a margin of several goals and hope that Altona also gets past Broadmeadow. Furthermore, Queanbeyan also hasn’t been mathematically eliminated as they will need to win in order to keep alive their hopes of clinching a knock-out place as one of the best two 3rd/4th placed teams.
