Despite the speculation linking Chedomir Janevski with the vacant Anorthosis managerial post, the Cypriot club chose Jorge Costa to become its next manager.
Chedomir Janevski will stay with the Macedonian national team after all as Anorthosis announced today that Portuguese Jorge Costa will take over as their new manager. Several days ago, Cypriot newspapers were reporting that Janevski was the favorite for the job, but they mentioned that the Football Federation of Macedonia (FFM) would not release Janevski from his contract. Anorthosis was looking to fill its position quickly as the season in Cyprus gets underway later this month, and they needed a manager to lead the club in trainings and friendlies prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign.
In the end, this could end up being a blessing for Janevski as Anorthosis has not had much patience with its managers in recent memory. As a matter of fact, Costa becomes manager #10 for Anorthosis since 2009.
Janevski can now focus on the final four games of the 2014 World Cup qualifications where he has said the aim is for Macedonia to finish in 3rd place, behind the inevitable top 2 of Belgium and Croatia. Then, at the end of this qualifying cycle in October, Janevski’s contract expires and FFM president Ilcho Gjorgjioski will have to decide whether to prolong Janevski’s deal.
