Tome Pacovski kept clean sheet for 120 minutes

Tome PacovskiGoalkeeper Tome Pacovski was named man of the match after keeping a clean sheet for 120 minutes to propel Beerschot to the quarter-finals of the Belgian Cup.

After a very good performance in a Belgian Cup game last month, the Beerschot manager Jacky Mathijssen decided to reward Pacovski and gave him the start in today’s domestic cup game against first division side Cercle Brugge.  It was a hard fought game and Pacovski made some fine saves to keep his team in the game.  It was 0:0 after 90 minutes so it went into extra time.  Beerschot was able to score the lone goal of the game in the 108th minute to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.  Despite this performance, Pacovski will not overtake the usual starting keeper Stijn Stijnen in league games.  However, these good performances are important for Pacovski to show other teams that he still deserves to be a starting keeper.  Tome is a free agent at the end of the season and these cup games will be his only opportunity to show his abilities.  After the game, Belgian newspapers named Pacovski the man of the match just like in the domestic cup game last month.

As for the other Macedonian internationals in Belgium, Boban Grncarov did not play in today’s game for Lierse because of an injury.  His club recorded an impressive 2:0 win over the defending Belgian champions Genk to advance to the next round of the Belgian Cup.  As for 19-year-old Aleksandar Trajkovski, he was an unused substitute for Zulte Waregem who lost 2:1 against Standard Liège.  Zulte Waregem was eliminated from the competition with today’s loss.
