Aco Stojkov and Aarau fell short of reaching the Swiss top division after losing 1:3 on aggregate to Sion in the promotion/relegation play-off.
Sion won the first leg at home 3:0 this past Saturday, and only lost 0:1 in today’s return leg on the road so they won 3:1 on aggregate to remain in the Swiss top division for next season. The Macedonian player on Aarau, Aco Stojkov, played 65 minutes in the first leg while for today’s game, Aco came off the bench in the 70th minute replacing midfielder David Marazzi.
Aarau finished in second place during the league season in the second division, which earned them a spot in the promotion/relegation play-off against Sion, the second from bottom team on the standings from the top division. However, Sion only finished so low on the standings because the Swiss FA deducted the club 36 points for fielding ineligible players in the UEFA Europa League.
With the aggregate loss, Aarau will remain in the second division next season. Stojkov, who has spent the past three seasons with Aarau, becomes a free agent in the summer.
