After sitting out for nearly a year, Robert Popov has finally found a team as he signed a 2 year deal with Cypriot club Alki Larnaca.
Robert Popov, the older brother of Goran Popov, will continue his career in Cyprus with Alki Larnaca. Popov was actually on trial at Alki in late April earlier this year and he showed enough that the team decided to make him an offer. The problem was that the Alki manager that signed Popov was fired after the season but the new manager has confirmed that Popov is in his plans and he will join the team. Alki finished 10th in the Cypriot top division this past season.
Popov is now 29 years old and returns to football after being out of action for close to a year. Popov plays as a right back and has made 15 appearances for the Macedonian national team. Right back has been a huge problem for the national team so the signing of Popov will add some much needed depth at that position. The top three right backs (Vlade Lazarevski, Aleksandar Todorovski, and Robert Popov) were all out of action for various reasons so that forced CB Vance Sikov to play out of position and cover at RB for the national team. Popov started his career with hometown club Belasica and has since played in Bulgaria with Litex Lovech and France with Auxerre. He had numerous injury problems while he was at Auxerre and Popov has been a free agent since the summer of 2010.
