Preview: UEFA EL – Portadown – Shkendija

Moment of the first match between Shkendija and PortadownAfter the 0:0 draw in Macedonia, Shkendija will be looking to grab at least one away goal with the hope of advancing to the second round of the UEFA Europa League qualifications.

Shkendija was the first Macedonian team to open the European campaign.  They started the first qualifying round of the Europa League with a scoreless draw at home against Portadown from Northern Ireland.  Shkendija was the better team throughout the game but could not reach the back of the net.

For the return leg, manager Kjatip Osmani will be looking for better efficiency up front in converting chances.  Shkendija will have to score at least one goal if they want to find themselves in the second round where Croatian side Slaven Belupo awaits.

Both teams don’t have impressive records when it comes to their European pedigree.  In the 3 games that Shkendija has played in Europa during its club history (two against Partizan in last year’s Champions League qualifications and against Portadown this year) they have yet to score a goal.  Portadown, on the other hand, don’t have a home win in their 6 home Europa League matches.  After the first leg draw, Portadown might hold a small favorite role but it could go either way.  Both teams know one another better after the first leg and if Shkendija scores one goal, it will be very difficult for Portadown.

The match will be played at Shamrock Park in Portadown, Northern Ireland.  The game will be officiated by Michael Johanson of Denmark.  Bookmakers give equal chances to both teams prior to kick-off.  There has been no TV coverage announced so far.
