After departing Varese, striker Mensur Kurtishi will stay in Italy as he signed for Matera in the third division.
The 29-year-old striker first moved to Italy this past February when he signed with struggling Serie B side Varese. That came after he was released by Brisbane Roar in Australia. At Varese, Kurtishi saw little action as he only played in 3 matches for a total of 138 minutes. He also dealt with an injury that forced him to miss the latter portion of the season.
Varese was eventually relegated by finishing in last place. Then, this summer, the club failed to obtain a license for the third division, meaning Varese ceased to exist.
His new club Matera competes in Serie C as well. They are located in Group C which is one of the three leagues in Italy’s third tier. Matera finished in 4th place during the 2014-15 campaign, leading to a spot in the promotion play-offs. There, they managed to eliminate Pavia, but were knocked-off in the semi-finals by Como.
Mensur has been capped twice by the senior national team of Macedonia (both in friendlies during the summer of 2011) and has played with numerous clubs such as Rapid Wien, Parndorf, Wiener Neustadt, Al-Taawon, Al-Shaab, Tobol and even Shkendija in the Macedonian league.
