Maso Cup ’18 group stage concluded

All the matches in the four groups ended earlier today and therefore the group stage of the most popular tournament among the Macedonian-Australian community got concluded.

The first group saw Rockdale and Preston fighting for the first place that eventually went to the Suns who in a direct match defeated the big rival with 2:0 thanks to the goals scored by Jonathan Grozdanovski and Bai Antoniou. The holders ended the group stage without conceding.

The second group was the most even and intense. Queanbeyan surprised Altona in the opening round, but was left empty handed on the end despite being equal on points with both Altona and Broadmeadow. They missed the quarter-finals because of worse goal-difference.

Wollongong and Lalor Utd shared the points in the first round and than easily beat the other two participants to book a place in the next round.

One of the title favorites, Banckstown, had a walkover in the last group. They only had to put on an effort to defeat Sydenham Park, but that game was only a match for the first place as both previously had qualified.

The quarter-finals will be played on Sunday and will feature some interesting match-ups. Holders Rockdale will have to confirm the role of favorite against the tough team of Lalor Utd. The highlight of the quarter-finals will probably be the clash between Wollongong and Preston, but Bankstown and Altona should also be interesting. We expect an equal game at Broadmeadow – Sydenham.
