Boban Grncarov’s late goal with a header forced extra time and Lierse ultimately managed to advance to the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup.
Boban Grncarov played all 120 minutes for Lierse in today’s return leg against Standard Liège in the Belgian Cup. Lierse lost the first leg at home by the score of 1:2 so the odds did not look good for the club. However, Lierse battled and forced extra time thanks to Grncarov giving Lierse the 2:1 win in the 90th minute when he sent a nice header past the opposing keeper. Boban went forward from his CB position since Lierse was needing a goal and connected on a good cross from the left to send a header to the back of the net. At that point, the aggregate score was 3:3 with each team winning 1:2 on the road so the game went into extra time. Lierse had the momentum and capitalized by scoring two more goals in extra time while the home side added one goal for a final score of 2:4 for the visitors. Therefore, Lierse advanced to the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup by winning 5:4 on aggregate over the two games against Standard Liège.
Lierse will face Lokeren in the semi-finals of the domestic cup. All of the big sides in Belgium have been eliminated from the competition so Lierse will look to win the trophy which will guarantee a place in a European competition next season. The four teams in the semi-finals include Lierse, Lokeren, Kortjirk, and Mons. Kortjirk eliminated Beerschot and Tome Pacovski to reach the semi-finals.
