Agim Ibraimi (L) agreed to an extension with Maribor; photo: nkmaribor.comAgim Ibraimi and Maribor reached an agreement today that will extend Ibraimi’s contract with the ten time Slovenian champions until May of 2015.

The new contract puts an end to all speculation about Ibraimi leaving Maribor this summer.  The club was pleased with Ibraimi’s contribution this season and decided to offer an extension which was accepted by Ibraimi.  In Slovenian league action and the domestic cup, Ibraimi made a combined 28 appearances and scored 11 goals.  Ibraimi, playing in right midfield, also had countless assists.  Maribor has already clinched the league title and will play in the Slovenian Cup final later this month against Celje, going for the double crown.  Agim also helped Maribor reach the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.

Speaking about the contract, Ibraimi, who turns 24 in August, told Maribor’s official website, “I am very happy with the extension and trust the club management.  From the first day, I believed in this project and have a wonderful relationship with the coaches, directors, and employees of the club.  I also get along tremendously with the other players and there is a good atmosphere surrounding the club.  I have no doubt that we will continue to achieve good things in the future as well.”

Despite his great form for Maribor this season, Ibraimi has failed to translate that over during his appearances with the Macedonian national team.  Agim has been capped eight times so far but has failed to make much of a difference, both under John Toshack and the former manager Mirsad Jonuz.

Ibraimi has experienced tremendous success in Slovenia with both Maribor and Olimpija Ljubljana, his former club from 2008-2010, but many of the members on our forum wanted Ibraimi to test his qualities in a better league.  Agim did have a disappointing brief stint in Turkey with Eskişehirspor which lasted only a couple of months before his eventual return to Slovenia.  However, Ibraimi appears to be happy at Maribor and decided to extend his contract until May of 2015.
