Vance Sikov shown direct red card

Defender Vance Sikov was shown a straight red card by the referee after committing a foul from behind against Metalist attacker José Sosa.

In the 48th minute, with Volyn leading 1:0 against Metalist, Macedonian CB Vance Sikov was given a harsh red card by the referee.  Sikov did seem to barely grab the jersey of Metalist striker José Sosa from behind but the opposing striker went down easily and convinced the referee to show Sikov a straight red card.  The Volyn players surrounded the referee in protest as Sikov couldn’t believe the red card.  However, the referee decided that Sikov committed a foul from behind while preventing a goal scoring opportunity so he decided to send off the Volyn defender.  After the red card, the Volyn manager decided to bring on defender Dino Drpić to cover for the loss of Sikov by sacrificing striker Maicon.

Prior to the red card in the 48th minute, Sikov was having a solid game in helping Volyn have a surprising 1:0 lead over third placed Metalist on the road.  Volyn scored the opening goal in the 7th minute through striker Yevhen Pavlov who was on target with a header following a corner kick from the right.  Vance also came close to scoring another goal for Volyn in the 45th minute but his powerful free kick from about 35 meters went just inches wide of the left goal post.  Volyn eventually lost the game 3:1 with Metalist scoring all three goals after the 83rd minute.  Volyn actually finished the game with 9 players after Brazilian midfielder Goeber also received a red card in the 66th minute.
