U21 Friendly: Serbia – Macedonia 4:1

Moment in the match; photo: zurnal.rsIn what was a rather dismal showing, the Macedonian U21 national team suffered a heavy 1:4 defeat against their Serbian counterparts.

Manager Boban Babunski decided to test some new players for the U21 team in the friendly against Serbia U21, but the performance was underwhelming on the way to a heavy road defeat.  The 1st half only ended without a goal because of some luck as Serbia had several huge chances and also had a goal disallowed in the 34th minute for offside.  Their two best chances came in the 38th and 41st minute, but the first opportunity hit the post before the ball was barely cleared on the rebound, while the second chance was wasted with a poor shot after a great position inside the area.

The 2nd half, however, was even worse with poor defending and positioning throughout the half.  Serbia U21 got its first goal in the 49th minute when a free kick into the box reached Uroš Đurđević who fired a shot past keeper Stole Dimitrievski.  Moments later, Macedonia lost concentration at the back and nearly conceded another goal, but the ball was just cleared off the line.  In the 59th minute, it was 2:0 after a huge blunder by Dimitrievski.  The right CB Aleksandar Damchevski played a pass back to the keeper who made a mess of it and allowed Miloš Jojić to gather the ball and score an easy goal into an empty net.

The lone positive for Macedonia came in the 62nd minute when Viktor Angelov won a free kick on the left hand side of the field.  Boban Nikolov then managed to score the only Macedonian goal directly from the free kick with a nice right footed shot past the Serbian keeper.

Macedonia. though, continued to struggle defensively and conceded two more goals.  Nikola Stoiljković, in the 71st minute, easily dribbled past the left side of the Macedonian defense before sending a shot past Dimitrievski, while Andrej Mrkela completed the scoreline when his effort barely crossed the line following a low cross from the left.
