U19: Macedonia – Montenegro 2:1

A late winner by Hristijan Kostovski in the 90th minute led Macedonia U19 to an important 2:1 victory over Montenegro U19.

Macedonia started brightly and took the deserving lead through Rabotnichki’s Darko Velkovski in the 12th minute following a corner kick into the box.  Velkovski had previously hit the post in the 5th minute.

That 1:0 lead would stick until the 64th minute when Montenegro U19 substitute Stefan Milosevic scored the equalizer.  However, Macedonia U19 got a late game winner from Hristijan Kostovski, who had come off the bench in the 74th minute, in the 90th minute to snatch all three points.

Macedonia U19 lineup: Aleksovski, Ristovski, Zajkov, Asani (87′ Sulejmanov), Talevski, Markovski (74′ Kostovski), Bardi, Velkovski (80′ Stoilov), Bojku, Imeri, Radeski.

In the other game of the group, Turkey U19 defeated Faroe Islands U19 2:0.  Today’s results make the third and final games of this group interesting since we could have three teams with 6 points when it’s all said and done.  If Montenegro U19 beats Turkey U19 and Macedonia U19 downs Faroe Islands U19 on 11 September, then Macedonia, Turkey and Montenegro will each have 6 points.  The first tiebreaker is head to head record but in that scenario, Turkey would have beaten Macedonia (already happened), Macedonia would have beaten Montenegro (already happened) and Montenegro would have beaten Turkey (assuming it happens).

Therefore, to avoid that situation, Macedonia U19 will be hoping for Turkey to either draw or beat Montenegro, while Macedonia U19 must of course take care of business and beat Faroe Islands to ensure a top two finish in the group, leading to a place in the elite round.
