Ivan Trickovski converted a spot kick in the penalty shootout to help APOEL advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
APOEL led 1:0 after 90 minutes so the game went into extra time since Lyon won the first leg with the same score in France. After 30 minutes of extra time, neither team could score a goal so the match went into penalty kicks. Lyon went first in the penalty shootout and the first three players for each team converted their spot kicks but then the APOEL keeper denied Lyon attacker Alexandre Lacazette on the fourth attempt. Trickovski was the fourth penalty kick taker for APOEL and calmly converted his spot kick while the APOEL keeper came up big again and denied Michel Bastos on the fifth attempt which meant that APOEL advanced to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League by winning 4:3 on penalties.
Ivan Trickovski initially started the game on the bench for APOEL before he came on in the 73rd minute replacing striker Esteban Solari. Ivan had one good chance in extra time around the 114th minute but his effort, following a counter attack, went well over the goal. APOEL scored the lone goal of regulation in the 9th minute when Gustavo Manduca connected from close range following a good low cross by Constantinos Charalambides. The goalscorer Manduca was shown a red card in the 115th minute (second yellow card) but APOEL held on to the slim 1:0 lead and forced a penalty shootout where the Cypriot club came out on top and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Another Macedonian international could be joining Trickovski in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Next week, on Wednesday to be exact, Napoli and Goran Pandev play the return leg away to Chelsea. The Italian side will be carrying a 3:1 advantage into the game from the first leg.
