Vance Sikov and his club Volyn suffered a heavy 5:1 road defeat at the hands of the defending Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.
Volyn started the game well and the first 15 minutes were pretty even but Shakhtar bombarded the Volyn goal in the last 30 minutes of the 1st half. They scored four goals in the span of 19 minutes from the 18th to 37th minute. Volyn pulled one goal back in the 52nd minute when Brazilian Maicon Oliveira scored with a header following a corner kick before Shakhtar added their fifth goal of the game in the 84th minute through Douglas Costa. As a matter of fact, all six goals during the game were scored by Brazilians as each goalscorer for the home side Shakhtar was also Brazilian.
As for Sikov, he started at left CB and played all 90 minutes. The Shakhtar attackers gave the Volyn defenders problems with their movement and created numerous chances. Sikov did have one chance for Volyn in the 65th minute, from a free kick, but his missile from about 35 meters was saved by the Shakhtar keeper who punched the ball away for a corner. Sikov also saved another goal being scored by Shakhtar Donetsk in the 87th minute when he cleared a shot by Douglas Costa just before the shot was ready to reach the back of the net. The shot beat the Volyn keeper but Sikov stuck his leg out and managed to clear the ball for a corner.
