Rams target Aussie Macedonian forward

Australian international forward Mile Sterjovski with Macedonian background  has emerged as Derby County’s latest target. The 28-year-old, currently with Turkish side Gençlerbirliği, is understood to be jetting in today to talk about a possible move to the Rams.

Sterjovski, who can play up front or on the wing, moved to Turkey from Swiss side FC Basel at the beginning of this season on a two-year deal but he and his family have struggled to settle there.

One of his former clubs, Sydney United, were interested in taking him back to his homeland but the player, of Macedonian origin, could be swayed by the chance of Premier League football. Sterjovski, who has also played for French club Lille, Parramatta Power and Wollongong Wolves, started three of Australia’s matches in World Cup 2006, against Brazil, Croatia and Italy.

He could become the latest recruit in Paul Jewell’s January spending spree, with the Rams boss close to taking his tally of new signings to six ahead of Saturday’s relegation battle against Wigan Athletic.
