Macedonian First League

Preview: Macedonian First League – Round 14

Macedonian First LeagueAfter the international break, domestic football returns with Round 14 as the match between Shkendija and Rabotnicki highlights the round.

Table leaders Vardar will host in-crisis Napredok who have lost three consecutive league games plus an additional domestic cup game against Rabotnicki.  Vardar is the big favorite and should have no problems with Napredok, considering their recent form, but the surprising defeat against 11 Oktomvri in the return leg of the domestic cup should warn the Vardar player not to underestimate Napredok.

Metalurg will be looking to keep up with Vardar near the top of the table when they host 11 Oktomvri.  After Marjan Sekulovski’s resignation from the Prilep based club, Trajce Ilijoski took over and the team has started playing much better.  First, a 2:2 draw against Shkendija in league play when they conceded a late goal in the 90th minute and then a 2:1 win against Vardar in the return leg of the domestic cup that was still not enough for the club to advance in the competition.

In the other games on Saturday, Teteks will face one of the domestic cup semi-finalists in Horizont Turnovo, Bregalnica will look to continue their recent good form against Renova in Stip, while Sileks hosts Ohrid in Kratovo in a match featuring two squads with similar quality as each side has 19 points after thirteen rounds on the table.

Finally, on Sunday, Shkendija will host Rabotnicki and their new manager Gjore Jovanovski who had an excellent debut with a 0:3 road win against Napredok in the second  leg of the quarter finals of the domestic cup.  Gjore Jovanovski recently stated that even though Rabotnicki is low on the table, they are not giving up their goal of finishing in first place.  A peculiar statement by Jovanovski so it will be interesting to see how the players react to their manager’s optimistic thoughts, considering the club has lost five consecutive league games to drop to eight place on the table.
