Pandev set to join Genoa in the summer

Goran Pandev in action for GalatasarayThe “I Rossoblu” have confirmed that Goran Pandev will join them after his contract with Galatasaray expires in June.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Goran Pandev has reached a deal with Genoa’s president Enrico Preziosi on a 2-year long contract. The deal has yet to be signed as the two sides will also discuss about adding a possible third year.

Pandev was already close to signing with Genoa this January, but the transfer collapsed in the last moments since the Serie A club didn’t have the slot to register another non-EU player.

The 31-year-old former Macedonian national team player (still top goalscorer) will move to Genoa as a free agent since his contract with Galatasaray was only for one year (expires on the 30th of June). He was getting some playing time at the beginning of the season when Cesare Prandelli led the club, but after Hamza Hamzaoğlu took over Pandev has mostly been featuring in cup matches. Later, Prandelli gave a statement in which he claimed that Galatasaray’s board brought both Pandev and Blerim Džemaili from Napoli without even consulting him.

Thus far, the Macedonian has played in only 2 Turkish league games, 3 in the Champions League group stages and 7 in the Turkish Cup. He scored 5 goals and recorded 1 assist, all in the Turkish Cup.

Pandev surprisingly left Italy last summer although he was quoted as saying that that he won’t leave Serie A. The move to Turkey looks to have been a huge mistake.

Goran had spent 14 years in Italy, playing for the likes of Inter, Spezia, Ancona, Lazio and Napoli, so Genoa will be his 6th Italian club. He won 9 trophies: 1 Champions League, 1 Club World Cup, 1 Scudetto, 1 Italian Super Cup and 5 Italian Cups. Interestingly, he is the only player that managed to win the Italian Cup in 4 consecutive years (from 2009 to 2012).
