Kurtishi inks deal with Varese

Mensur Kurtishi has joined Nikola Jakimovski at Italian Serie B side Varese.

The 28-year-old striker moves to Varese as a free agent after his one year contract with Australian side Brisbane Roar was terminated in mid January. Kurtishi played only half a season in the A-League, making 9 appearances in which he scored once and recorded one assist. Thanks to his Austrian passport, obtained since he lived there after age 13, he got registered for Varese as an EU player.

Kurtishi will be joined at Varese by Nikola Jakimovski who signed there earlier this summer. Varese have a tough road in front of them as they are struggling to get out of the relegation zone. Currently, Mensur’s new club lies second from bottom on the standings, but the difference between Varese and the safe zone is only 2 points. Keep in mind that Varese has been deducted 3 points for financial irregularities.

Mensur signed until June and he will be wearing the number 17 on the back of his shirt. Varese hosts Brescia on Saturday, but it is unclear if Kurtishi will be in the squad since he just had his first training with the new team today. Mensur has played only twice for the national team of Macedonia, both friendlies back in 2010 (vs. Azerbaijan and Romania).
