Lombard-Pápa defender Jasmin Mecinovikj has denied allegations that he was involved in a betting scandal that is affecting his former club Egri from a game last season.
Jasmin Mecinovikj finds himself in hot water after police authorities accused him, and numerous other players, of being involved in a betting scandal. The game in question is from last season in the league encounter between Egri and Paks on 4 May 2013. Paks would go on to win that game 2:3 on the road in what police authorities believe included betting irregularities. Mecinovikj was a member of Egri last season and played the full 90 minutes in the Egri vs. Paks game. He joined Lombard-Pápa in time for the 2013-14 season after Egri was relegated by finishing in last place.
Mecinovikj is the lone non-Hungarian player that is suspected by police to be involved in the betting scandal. In total, 45 players have been implicated of wrongdoing by police.
On Lombard-Pápa’s website, Jasmin’s lawyers denied that their client was guilty of any crime. They noted that Mecinovikj will file a complaint challenging the accusations. In addition, the lawyers stated that Jasmin has already replied in detail to all questions that were raised by prosecutors. Furthermore, they reinforced that Mecinovikj will cooperate with authorities in order to clear his name.
While the investigation is ongoing, Jasmin will be unable to participate in any matches that are organized by the Hungarian Football Federation.
The 23-year-old Mecinovikj is a former member of the Macedonian U21 national team. Besides his stay in Hungary, Jasmin has also played in Norway with Sogndal and Moldova with Sheriff and Tiraspol. Sheriff was his first international club after he transferred there from FK Skopje.
