Ivan Trickovski continues to make a name for himself in Europe with another solid performance for APOEL.  Tricko showed his versatility by playing on the right and left wings.  Ivan spent much of the 1st half tracking back and helping out on defense.  APOEL played very defensive early in the game with 10 players in their own half of the field, including Trickovski, with Ailton Almeida being the lone player who spent his time close to the Shakhtar Donetsk goal.

APOEL decided to open things up in the 2nd half and they were rewarded in the 61st minute when Trickovski opened the scoring by showing nice finishing skills.  Trickovski played a nice one-two with teammate Constantinos Charalambides before slotting the ball past the diving Shakhtar Donetsk keeper.  However, three minutes later, Shakhtar Donetsk scored the equalizing goal through Brazilian Jádson.  Shakhtar outshot APOEL by a wide margin but the Cypriot club played disciplined football and managed to collect a point on the road against a quality opponent.

Trickovski said the following to UEFA.com shortly after the game ended, “We are very happy about the result. It was a difficult game but we knew we needed to defend and counter attack. We could have won the game but the draw was still a great result for us in the end. If we carry on playing well then we will always have something to fight for.”

With the draw, APOEL is now in 1st place in Group G with four points.  Porto and Zenit have three points apiece while Shakhtar Donetsk is at the bottom with only one point after two games.
