Goran Pandev debuted for Napoli and should have scored a goal but he shockingly hit the post with an empty goal in front of him.
With the game tied at 1:1, Napoli manager Walter Marazzi decided to bring on Pandev in the 66th minute by sacrificing defender Salvatore Aronica. Seconds after Pandev entered the game, Napoli took the 2:1 lead after Hugo Campagnaro scored from close range. Napoli dominated play at this stage as Cesena was playing with ten men after defender Yohan Benalouane was shown a red card in the 56th minute.
However, in the 85th minute, Pandev shockingly missed an open goal by striking the post. Napoli executed a counter attack and the Cesena keeper charged the Napoli player, Christian Maggio, to save his shot but Maggio was unselfish and played a ball to Pandev who had an open goal in front of him but he struck the crossbar. Maggio couldn’t believe Pandev missed as Goran could only laugh at missing such a chance. It was unacceptable and it certainly will not go over well with the Napoli fans, coaches, and players. You simply can not miss those kinds of chances.
In the end, Napoli won 3:1 but Pandev will definitely receive criticism for his big miss in the 85th minute. He was bailed out by Marek Hamšík who then scored a goal two minutes later to secure the win for Napoli. Napoli will now focus on the Champions League as their next game is this upcoming Wednesday against Manchester City to be played in England.
