Getting to know series: Aleksandar Stankov

Aleksandar StankovWe recently did an interview with Aleksandar Stankov where he talked about his hometown Shtip, his bond with his twin brother, and what he can bring to the national team if he were to be selected, among other things.

Aleksandar Stankov, currently a member of Danish side Viborg, sat down for an interview with MacedonianFootball.com where he addressed several topics.  Aleksandar, who has always played on the same teams with his twin brother Antonio growing up, talked about the thought process of not being on the same team nor in the same country as his twin at this stage in their careers.  The 22-year-old Stankov also compared the championships in Denmark and the Netherlands, and talked about what he could bring the national team if he were called up to the squad in the future.

In the current 2013-14 season in Denmark’s top flight, Stankov has accumulated 4 goals in 17 league appearances.  The league is now on its winter break as the season will resume in late February.

Below is the Q and A session with Aleksandar Stankov:

MF: Aleksandar, you and your twin brother Antonio were born in Shtip. What are your memories of your hometown?
AS: Yes, we were born in Shtip in 1991, we lived there 9 years and it was good.  I remember we always played football outside, every day, we never went to a club or even thought about playing for a club, but we loved to play football outside and that’s one of my memories, always playing outside together.

MF: How close are you with Antonio? Was it tough not to be on the same team?
AS: Me and Antonio are each other’s best friends.  We know each other better than anyone and of course it’s hard being away.  We both want to make the best of our careers, so if that’s what it takes then we’ll just have to do that. Hopefully we can play together again soon.

MF: What is your current contract situation with Viborg, and what aspirations do you have for the future?
AS: I have a half year left on my contract with Viborg.  I’m really happy here and the club is satisfied with me and wants to extend my contract, so we’re talking about it. But of course I would like to play for a bigger club, so we’ll see how it will go.

MF: How would you compare the Danish and Dutch championships since you have played in each of those leagues?
AS: I think the Danish Superliga is at a high level with good players, but still the Dutch Eredivisie is an even bigger and tougher league.  In the Superliga, clubs play good football but I think in the Eredivisie the game is of a higher technical and tactical level.

MF: What can you tell the new manager Boshko Gjurovski about what you can bring to the national team?
AS: About what I could bring to the national team, I think I have a lot of energy in my game.  Also, because me and my brother have played in the Dutch highest league, I think we can bring a bit more.  We have a good mentality, more like ‘over my dead body’ so I think we could definitely help the team.  But, like I said, it’s up to them to call us up.

MF: What were your fondest memories of playing for the U21 team earlier in your career?
AS: It was definitely great to play for the youth national teams.  It’s nice to play friendly games every now and then against a big football country, but of course the best memories are playing the Europian Qualifications because that’s when it matters.
