EURO 2016: Macedonia finds itself in 5th pot

UEFA Euro 2016The draw for EURO 2016 is scheduled for the 23rd of February, and today UEFA officially announced the pots.  Macedonia found itself in the 5th pot.

53 teams were split into six pots that will eventually form nine groups, eight of six countries and one of five.  Football fans will be eagerly awaiting 23 February when the draw takes place to announce the nine groups for EURO 2016.  The tournament will be held in France.

Unlike the previous European qualifications, in 2016 there will be 24 countries qualifying for the tournament.  That is 8 more slots than previous EURO tournaments, so there should be more excitement along the way.  The top two teams in each group will qualify for the finals in France along with the third-placed side with the best record against the nations first, second, fourth and fifth in their pool. The remaining eight third-placed teams will enter the play-off in November 2015 for the remaining four berths.

Pot 1: Spain (holders), Germany, Netherlands, Italy, England, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina
Pot 2: Ukraine, Croatia, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland
Pot 3: Serbia, Turkey, Slovenia, Israel, Norway, Slovakia, Romania, Austria, Poland
Pot 4: Montenegro, Armenia, Scotland, Finland, Latvia, Wales, Bulgaria, Estonia, Belarus
Pot 5: Iceland, Northern Ireland, Albania, Lithuania, Moldova, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Cyprus
Pot 6: Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Malta, Andorra, San Marino, Gibraltar

EURO 2016 qualifying will span from September of 2014 to October of 2015.  All of the qualifiers will be played in the period from Thursday to Tuesday on a given week. UEFA stated that kick-off times will be set mainly at 18.00 CET and 20.45 CET on Saturdays and Sundays and 20.45CET for Thursdays, Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays.  Furthermore, for double-header matchweeks, teams will play on Thursday/Sunday, Friday/Monday or Saturday/Tuesday.
