Denis Mahmudov is not a well known name to most Macedonian football supporters, but he made a noteworthy transfer on Friday to PEC Zwolle.  Mahmudov made the jump from Excelsior ’31, a team that plays in the third tier of Dutch football, straight into the top flight in the same country.

Looking into his career background, Mahmudov, although born in Macedonia, has spent his entire playing career in the Netherlands.  He has mostly played in the lower divisions with his highest level, until today, being in the second division for two years.  However, that will change in January when he will join up with Zwolle’s first team for the start of the 2nd half of the season in the Dutch top division.

Mahmudov is 24 years old and plays as a striker.  Over the past two seasons, he has played for Excelsior ’31 in the Dutch third tier.  Mahmudov has been a prolific scorer with 35 goals in 42 league games since the start of the 2012-13 season.

That form and goalscoring record led to Denis securing a trial with Zwolle in November.  He obviously left a good enough impression that led to today’s transfer announcement.  On its official website, Excelsior ’31 stated that negotiations with Zwolle were tough, but both sides eventually reached common ground on a transfer fee on 24 December.  They waited for the Christmas holiday to pass before announcing the transfer on Friday.

We will see how Mahmudov adjusts to the drastic leap in quality from the third flight to the top division in the Netherlands.  Regardless, FFM would be wise to get in contact with Mahmudov to gauge his interest in whether he would represent Macedonia if manager Boshko Gjurovski were to call him up sometime in the future.
