Daniel Ivanovski moves to Iceland with Fjölnir

The central defender will undergo a new adventure in his career as he will play in the Icelandic top division.

The 31-year-old Daniel Ivanovski leaves Sweden this winter after spending 8.5 years in the colors of Mjällby. He stays in Northern Europe, going to the far north-west corner of Iceland. He signed for 1 year with Fjölnir, a small club from the capital city of Reykjavík. The experienced defender will surely bring stability in the team’s back line. Fjölnir last season ended in 9th place, just two more points than 11th placed Fram who got relegated.

Ivanovski, who was called “Ivan” by his fans in Sweden said this on his Facebook profile, “New club, new opportunities! I want to thank all Mjällby supporters and everyone who believed in me through all these years while I was playing for Mjällby AIF. Thanks to all the players in the team and thanks for the nice friends I have found over the years. I would also like to thank my wonderful family for all their support during both good times and bad. I’m sad that it ended like this. Good luck this season guys! From a yellow top to another yellow shirt. See you in Iceland.”

“We wish him all the best in Iceland, although I still don’t know which club he is joining. He has performed great both on and off the pitch, we sat and discussed the extension of the contract but Ivan wanted to go out on a new adventure”, said Mjällby board member Jörgen Martinsson for Kristianstadsbladet.se.

Before going to Sweden in the summer of 2006, Ivanovski played in Macedonia for Vardar and Sileks, the latter being the team from his hometown of Kratovo. He played only 4 times for the senior national team of Macedonia.

The best Icelandic league, called Úrvalsdeild, begins on the 3rd of May, but the group stage of the League Cup is already under way. Fjölnir’s next fixture is a home game against second league side Selfoss this Sunday.
