Macedonia will be represented by another national team member in the UEFA Champions League group stages, besides Goran Pandev, after Daniel Georgievski and Steaua București booked their place in the prestigious competition.
Steaua București played a 2:2 draw in the road game today in Warsaw against Legia, doing just enough to reach the Champions League group stages. It was 3:3 on aggregate over the two games, but Steaua prevailed due to the away goals rule. In the end, the defending Romanian champions eliminated Vardar, Dinamo Tbilisi and Legia in the qualifying process to advance to the Champions League.
Both Napoli and Steaua will learn their opponents when the draw for the group stages is held on 29 August. The Champions League Round of 32 will consist of eight groups with four teams in each group. Napoli and Steaua can’t be in the same group since both teams will be seeded in pot 4 when the drawing takes place this Thursday.
On Wednesday, Pandev and Georgievski could be joined in the competition by Agim Ibraimi as well, but his team Maribor faces a difficult challenge in overcoming a 1:3 deficit from the first leg against Viktoria Plzeň. A 2:0 win would be the dream result for Maribor who has to have the right combination of aggressiveness and patience heading into the game since conceding a goal will make things that much more difficult in their goal of reaching the Champions League group stages.
