Boban Babunski is no longer U21 national team coach as FFM decided to cancel his contract due to the unsatisfying results in the current qualifiers.
Babunski was in charge of the U21 national team since June 2009 and completed exactly 5 years. FFM today decided that the U21s are underperforming in the current qualifications where Macedonia has only 4 points from 6 games.
The expectations increased as in the previous qualifiers Babunski achieved great results since Macedonia was fighting for the play-offs untill the very last round. In the current qualifiers the team only managed to win points against Azerbaijan with a goalless draw away and a 1:0 win at home. Macedonia got beaten twice by Norway (2:1 away, 3:1 at home) and Portugal (2:0 away, 1:0 at home) lying at the bottom of the group with no chances and two games left, both against Israel.
The official statement released by FFM says that “The decision for the dismissal is based on the results in the current qualifications for the EURO 2015 as they do not correspond with the expectations, ambitions and the quality of the current U21 national team.”
The FFM hasn’t named any possible candidates, but one thing it’s sure, it will definitely be a Macedonian coach.
