Dejan Stojanovic conducted an interview with Austrian “Heute” in which he talks about his still unclear national team situation. The title is “Italy-international Stojanovic criticizes the ÖFB”. Below are some parts of the interview made a couple of days ago.
The article starts with some information about Dejan Stojanovic and the statement that he was surprised that no one from the Austrian football federation has called him during the past twelve months. The beginning questions were about his club football, regarding his development and transfer to Italy. The latter questions get to his national team future, and following are four questions that address that topic:
You played three times for the Macedonian U21 national team, but lastly you were on the bench for Austria’s U19 national team and did not get a chance to play in the games. How is it currently, for which country do you want to play in the future and why?
In a year, no one from the ÖFB has called me. For me that is a sign that Austria has no interest in me. Macedonia, on the other hand, wants me for the senior national team. Unfortunately, this is not possible right now since I have just Austrian citizenship.
That means Macedonia strives for you more than Austria?
Yes. I get a call after every game, whether it went well or not. No one calls from Austria. I think that being in Seria A is not interesting for them.
Do you have an explanation for this, did something happen?
No, nothing. But since Werner Gregoritsch is the coach of the U21, I have not been considered. For the games against England and Slovakia, they even called up players from the fourth German league.
How do you see the goalkeeper situation in Austria? Is there really the often cited crisis?
No, there should be no crisis because for the U21 games against England and Slovakia they nominated three goalkeepers and two are on call. I am not one of them. If you can afford to not call up a player from Seria A, well, then there can’t be a crisis.
The original interview was done by Erich Elsigan.
Concerning Stojanovic, in late May of this year, Macedonian manager Chedomir Janevski made the following statements, “I have to say that we are following two keepers for the future. Stojanovic of Bologna wants to play for Macedonia, but in the moment he possesses an Austrian passport and, due to rules, he would have to abandon that passport to pick up a Macedonian passport. However, in not even a full year, he will receive an Italian passport and then he should have no problem in obtaining Macedonian documents as well. The second young goalie is Deni Iliev of Arsenal, who is currently injured, but we will follow him closely as he is the future of Macedonian football.
