Aleksandar Vasoski to retire from the national team

Karel Poborský and Aleksandar VasoskiOnce regular in the Macedonia back line, the many injuries have forced Aleksandar Vasoski to make a very hard decision: to retire from the national team.

Macedonian fans favorite and centre back of Eintrach Frankfurt, 31-year-old Aleksandar Vasoski declared that it is time to say goodbye to the red kit with the national crest. The one and only reason is the newest injury that will bench him for at least a month. His injury came in the friendly game against Bundes-rivals Köln that took place in Turkish football centre Antalya.

“I asked coach Mirsad Jonuz to call me on one of the next friendly matches so that I can have a farewell game in the national team. I am very sorry but the so many injuries put me far away from the national team in the past years. Now I have almost 32 years and I think that the coach is right when he gives a chance to the younger players. But, my wish is to play one more game for Macedonia and honorable to say goodbye to the Macedonian fans that supported me throughout my career.” – said Vasoski for daily newpaper Vreme.

Asked by the same media, national team coach Mirsad Jonuz confirmed that Vasoski’s wish will be fullfilled. “He will be called in one of the friendly games that will be played this year so he will have his farewell game.” Surely that wont happen on 9th next month as Vasoski won’t be recovered. Anyway, FFM is still searching for an opponent. Slovenia is hosting Macedonia for a friendly in June, but that game isn’t an option because Vasoski’s farewell game must be on the National Arena Philip II of Macedon in Skopje so he could be praised by the Macedonian fans.

Vasoski will retire from the national team, but he is not think about retiring from club football. “I have a torn muscle. I just earned my place in the starting 11 and now I wont be playing for a whole month. I feel like home in Frankfurt. I have a contract with Eintracht untill June this year and I would like to keep playing for at least one more season or maybe two. But everything will depend from my health condition. At the moment I’m not thinking about retiring from football.” – says Vasoski for Vreme.

He played 32 games for Macedonia and his last was in November 2008 away in Montenegro when he substituted Boban Grncarov in the 74th minute as Macedonia lost 2:1. He also scored twice in his national team career.
