Slovenian newspaper Ekipa.org is reporting that Dutch side PSV Eindhoven has shown interest in Agim Ibraimi as a potential replacement for departing winger Dries Mertens.
Dries Mertens recently completed a transfer to Goran Pandev’s team Napoli, so PSV Eindhoven is looking for his replacement. Mertens was very productive during his time with the Dutch club as he scored 37 goals in 62 league appearances as a winger. One of the names that’s being mentioned as a possible replacement is Macedonian international Agim Ibraimi who can play on both the left and right wings. Agim is coming off a very successful 2012-13 season in which he helped Maribor win the domestic title, domestic cup and today they won the Super Cup as well with Agim providing two assists in the 3:0 win over Olimpija.
It is possible that PSV scouts tracked Ibraimi during the two World Cup qualifying games between Belgium and Macedonia this past March. Mertens is a Belgian international and played in the second game between the two national teams on 26 March, while Ibraimi featured in both encounters, leaving an especially good impression in the 22 March qualifier when he was the most dangerous Macedonian player.
Agim, who turns 25 in late August, has nothing left to prove in Slovenia. He has won every title domestically, as mentioned earlier, and helped Maribor reach the group stages of the Europa League in each of the past two seasons. He has compiled 15 goals in 52 league appearances for Maribor, while also dishing out a number of assists. Last year, Ibraimi was voted as the best footballer in Slovenia’s top division by the coaches and players of the 10 team league.
Ibraimi, in addition to his good performances for Maribor, has also improved drastically while playing for Macedonia. Agim didn’t do much under former managers Mirsad Jonuz and John Toshack, but has really benefited from the appointment of Chedomir Janevski as national team manager in August of 2012. Ibraimi has scored all four of his goals for Macedonia under Janevski, and has now tallied a total of 20 caps.
