2014 Maso Cup: group stage concluded

Wollongong United and Altona Magic before their clash; photo: Maso Cup 2014Two wins out of two for Broadmeadow Magic, Bankstown City Lions and Rockdale City Suns as day one of the 2014 edition of the Maso Cup concluded.

To begin, after Coniston Lions cancelled their participation and saw their place taken by Newcastle Macedonia, Shell Cove Barbarians also withdrew and they were replaced by the U20 team of Bankstown City Lions, a team that participated in last year’s edition as well.

The 2014 Maso Cup saw a new format. 12 teams were divided into 4 groups of 3 with the first placed team going directly to the quarter-finals, while all the other teams will be ranked according to their accumulated points.  Based on that, they will than enter qualification games to fill out the remainder of the quarter-finals. That means that after the group stage, no teams will be eliminated.  Instead, everyone is guaranteed one more game.

Today, the group stage concluded with Broadmeadow Magic, Bankstown City Lions and Rockdale City Suns winning their respective groups by achieving the maximum points and not conceding any goals.

The quick tournament will end tomorrow. First on the schedule are the qualification games, then the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals and finally the grand final.

Based on the accumulated points and goal difference, these are the pairs for the qualification games that will lead to a spot in the quarter-finals (all times are local):

Game 13 at 09.30: Bankstown City Lions U20 vs. Arncliffe Scots
Game 14 at 10.20: Newcastle Suns vs. Queanbeyan City
Game 15 at 11.10: Cringila Lions vs. Yagoona Lions
Game 16 at 12.00: Wollongong United vs. Newcastle Macedonia

The winners of the above matchups will then face the 4 group winners in the quarter-finals:
