Yani Urdinov nears deal with AEK Larnaca

Urdinov (in red) looks set to join AEK LarnacaAccording to multiple newspaper reports, Yani Urdinov is expected to arrive in Cyprus tomorrow where he is expected to sign a 2 and a half year deal with AEK Larnaca.

The 21-year-old Yani Urdinov is apparently close to finalizing a transfer to AEK Larnaca from Cyprus.  Several newspapers from that country reported earlier today, according to sources, that Urdinov will arrive at AEK Larnaca headquarters tomorrow, and that the two sides have already reached an agreement in principle over the next 2 and a half years.

Urdinov, who plays primarily as a left-back, would join AEK Larnaca after spending the past year with Ekranas from Lithuania.  Ekranas recently won the league title in the season that concluded last month.  Ekranas barely edged out Žalgiris by one point with Urdinov being a regular starter at LB.

Yani was formerly a regular for the Macedonian U21 national team, but he is no longer eligible for that squad since he was born in 1991.  Moving forward, players will need to be born in 1992 or later to be eligible for the U21 team.  Under former senior national team manager John Toshack, Urdinov also made three appearances for the A team, making his debut in the friendly against Portugal which finished 0:0.  However, under new manager Chedomir Janevski, Urdinov has not been called up.  At the left-back position, Janevski has thus far called up players such as Goran Popov, Aleksandar Lazevski and 19-year-old Mite Cikarski (when Popov was left out of the squad for the November friendly against Slovenia).  Moving to Cyprus, which is a much better league than Lithuania and a place where Janevski has managed in the past, could improve Urdinov’s chances of returning to the national team in the future.

After 12 rounds of the Cypriot top division this season, AEK Larnaca finds itself in 3rd place, trailing only Anorthosis and APOEL.
