The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has decided to suspend Albanian footballer Mirlind Daku for two matches for his primitive outburst after the end of the match between Albania and Croatia at EURO 2024 in Germany.
As a reminder, throughout this match there were many scandalous offensive chants from both fan groups directed at their neighbor, Serbia. An even bigger scandal was made by Mirlind Daku, who had a primitive nationalist outburst after the final whistle was blown. Instead of calming down the passions between the fans as an athlete, Daku led an offensive chant on the field with a megaphone in his hand, where together with the group of Albanian fans in the stands, he cursed the Macedonians and the Serbs.
The ridiculous punishment of UEFA, which suspends the offender with only two non-playing matches, is more than shocking.
Should such a primitive, barbaric move by a football player be punished with only two matches?
And what is the main point of what UEFA did? An awfully mild penalty with which they send a message that tomorrow anyone can come with a megaphone and shout everything they shouldn’t without fearing that they will be punished draconian.
Finally, a rhetorical question. Would Daku have received such a ridiculous penalty from UEFA if he had insulted one of the larger Western European nations such as the English, the French or the Germans?
