The Super Cup has been brought back this season as Vardar and Rabotnichki will square off on August 19.
The Super Cup is usually played before the start of the league season in most countries, but this year it will be played after the second round of the First League. Rabotnichki is still active in the Europa League qualifications, which is why the date was pushed back by the Macedonian federation.
The Super Cup is played between the winners of the league title and cup title, from the previous season. So, this year, that means Vardar (league champions) versus Rabotnichki (cup champions). The game will take place at the National Arena Philip II of Macedon in Skopje, a stadium that serves as the home for both clubs.
Since the independence of Macedonia, only two editions of the Super Cup have taken place. Back in 2011, Shkendija became the first winner after beating Metalurg, while the other Super Cup took place in 2013 when Vardar claimed the title with a win over Teteks. There were no Super Cups played in between those years, or before 2011.
Vardar will now have a chance to win it for the second time, while this will be Rabotnichki’s first appearance in the competition. The Super Cup is the only domestic trophy that is missing from Rabotnichki’s collection, so they will look to change that on August 19.
