Robert Popov let go by Alki

Macedonian defender Robert Popov is no longer an Alki player after the club announced that he is no longer in the plans of the team.

With a brief statement on their official website, Cypriot club Alki stated that Robert Popov is no longer with the team as he is not in the plans of the technical leadership and Popov will not join their preparations which will be held in Poland.  Popov just signed with Alki earlier this summer but is now once again without a team.  Robert is the older brother of Goran Popov who currently plays for Dynamo Kyiv and is the starting LB for the Macedonian national team.

Robert is usually deployed as a RB and has made 15 appearances for the senior national team.  He started his career with hometown club Belasica before he then made a transfer to Bulgarian club Litex Lovech.  Popov made a name for himself for Litex and his good form led to a transfer to French team Auxerre.  However, Popov battled injuries during his time in France and failed to make much of an impact.  He ultimately decided to mutually terminate his contract and was out of football for about a year before he signed with Alki earlier this summer.  Popov is now 29 years old and has contemplated retirement over the past year so he might decide to retire this time after another unsuccessful attempt to land with a team.
