Overview of Round 8 in the First League

Vardar and Rabotnichki met for the second time in five days, after the Super Cup fixture this past Wednesday. Vardar won that one in the penalty shootout, and today’s rematch was more of the same. Vardar came out on top again and did it in dramatic fashion with a late game winner. Bazhe Ilijoski initially gave Rabotnichki the lead midway through the 1st half with a strong header, but Vardar equalizer just after halftime with a header by Filip Ivanovski. The match seemed headed for a draw, but Vardar had a case for the heroics. Following a free kick in the third minute of stoppage time, the ball found Goran Popov who sent a close range header to the back of the net. With that, Rabotnichki continues to be in terrible form. This is already their fourth loss in just seven league encounters (they have a game in hand).

In the municipality of Chair, Shkendija maintained its good run of form with another win, this time against Sileks. Ferhan Hasani once again led the way with a brace. Hasani now has 10 goals in the opening eight rounds, making him the leading goalscorer in the league. The other Shkendija goal was scored by Besart Ibraimi on a great strike from distance, while Igor Nedeljković grabbed the only goal for Sileks.

Mladost and Shkupi, the two promoted clubs heading into this season, squared off in Ohrid. Both teams have been pleasant surprises so far, but Shkupi would prevail on Sunday. One early goal in both halves propelled them to a 2:0 victory.

Bregalnica, very inconsistent with their play this season, put together a solid all-around performance to celebrate a convincing 3:0 win over Turnovo. The team received good contributions from numerous players, including three different goalscorers in Angel Nacev, Slavcho Velkovski and Goran Zdravkov.

Metalurg, meanwhile, finally won its first game of the season. It took eight rounds, but they are now in the books. Metalurg managed to overcome Renova 1:0, meaning both of these teams now have 5 points. They sit in a tie for last place. Zoran Danoski, a newcomer in the summer, brought Metalurg the much needed three points with a quality goal.
