The 1st half started with both teams getting a feel for one another and there was not a good chance in the first 15 minutes.  Serbia created the first real opportunity in the 17th minute but the effort by Luka Milunović went wide of the goal.  Four minutes later, Macedonian right-back Stefan Ristovski saved a goal when he made an important goal line clearance after the goalkeeper Gacevski was beat.  Ferhan Hasani tested the Serbian keeper from a free kick in the 23rd minute but his free kick was saved comfortably.  Serbia created another chance in the 27th minute but a header following a free kick ended up straight into the hands of the keeper Filip Gacevski.  In the 38th minute, because of an injury, Antonio Stankov had to be substituted by Yani Urdinov.

Early in the 2nd half, Serbia had a good chance following a counter attack but one of their players missed from a good position by sending his shot wide of the goal.  Macedonia then created the best opportunity of the game in the 57th minute when Ilija Nestorovski nearly scored a goal.  He received a good low cross from the right but Nestorovski just missed the ball on his sliding attempt in front of goal.  In the 73rd minute, Serbia opened the scoring when substitute Sasa Marković scored with a volley past the diving keeper Gacevski after connecting on a cross from the left.  That goal seemed demoralizing for the Macedonian players but they kept on playing and the home side was finally rewarded in the 88th minute when Marjan Altiparmakovski was fouled inside the area by Vujadin Savić of Serbia.  The referee immediately pointed to the spot and Hasani converted the penalty.
