Macedonia U19 to play at XVII Mediterranean Games

Mediterranean GamesThe Macedonian U19 national team will have a unique chance to participate at the XVII Mediterranean Games that will be held this year.

For the first time Macedonia will take part at the Mediterranean Games and among the hundred Macedonian sportists there will be the U19 national team players. The Mediterranean Games are a multi-sport games held every four years at which participate countries surrounding the Mediteranean Sea from three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. Since the first edition in 1951 and untill 1991, Macedonian sportists have taken part but under the Yugoslav flag and won 38 medals (17 golden, 12 silver, 9 bronzes) but none at football.

The football tournament until 1991 was for senior teams, than it was for U21 and now since the last edition in 2009 it is for U19 national teams. Players such as Gianluigi Buffon, Francesco Totti, Stefano Fiore, Zlatko Vujović, Yıldıray Baştürk, Jordi Alba and Stefan Savić have participated at these games. Usually not all countries send a football team. For example, four years ago the football tournament was consisted of Albania, France, Greece, Italy, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Spain, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Title holders are Spain (second in a row) who beat Italy 2:1 in the final.

The games will begin on 20 June 2013 and will end ten days later. Host city is Mersin in Turkey.
