Numerous newspapers in Belgium are reporting the Lierse interest in Macedonian CB Boban Grncarov.  The team has begun talks with Grncarov with the hope of signing him to strengthen their defense.  Grncarov is currently a free agent after spending the past two years with APOEL.  He initially wanted to re-sign with APOEL but the two sides could not agree on a new contract.  Grncarov wanted a three year deal while APOEL was not willing to offer more than two years.  In the end, Grncarov made 43 appearances and scored eight goals during his two years with APOEL.  He was able to play in the Champions League group stages during the 2009-2010 season and Grncarov played in all six group games against the likes of Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, and Porto.

Grncarov has played in Belgium before so it shouldn’t be a big adjustment as one of his former teams includes Gent.  Grncarov is coming off a very good season where he was a regular for the Cypriot champions APOEL and scored six goals from the CB position.  He is very tall and all six goals came on headers from corner kicks or free kicks.  Grncarov is dominant in the air but like many big defenders, he does struggle with little, speedy attackers.  Boban has made 21 appearances for the Macedonian national team and has scored one goal against Norway in a World Cup qualifier.  He has recently overtaken Igor Mitreski to become the starter for Macedonia but he made a huge blunder in the Ireland game earlier this month that gifted the opponents a soft goal.

His potential new team Lierse finished 14th this past season in the Belgian top division and they barely avoided relegation.  Former Macedonian international Nderim Nedzipi played for Lierse in the past before he was released last year.
