Europa League preview: Anorthosis vs Rabotnicki

Anorthosis vs RabotnickiRabotnicki is the only Macedonian club left in the European cups and is facing Cypriot side Anorthosis in the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League.

Four matches untill the group stage but, the most difficult. First opponent is the 13 times winner of Cypriot league, Anorthosis Famagusta who this year celebrates the 100 annyversary (founded in 1911). The club finished 3rd in the last season but with 17 points behind champions APOEL. In the season 2008/09 the popular Megali Kiria entered the group stage of the Champions League, which is the club’s biggest sucess. In a hard group with Inter, Werder and Panathinaikos, Anorthosis recorded one win (3:1 vs Panathinaikos) and 3 draws (0:0 and 2:2 vs Werder; 3:3 vs Inter). But, the players that played back than are totally different that those who are at the club today. That’s why Anorthosis isn’t unbeatable. They reached the 3rd round by beating Georgian side Garga in the previous round with 3:2 on aggregate after a 3:0 win at home and a 2:0 defeat away. Manager of the team is former Bulgarian national team player Stanimir Stoilov who has players of 10 different countries in the squad.

For a third consecutive time Rabotnicki will play in the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League. Two years ago it was Danish side Odense who eliminated the Club Heroe, while last year it was Premier League giants Liverpool. Third luck maybe? The newest signing, Ivan Nastevski from Vardar is in the squad who is mainly consisted of young and talented players with only 6 players older than 25. Rabotnicki also has Filip Petkovski,  the Europa League top scorer so far with 4 goals in 4 games, same as Rad’s player Nemanja Kojić.

The game will be played at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca with a kick-off at 19.00 CET (20.00 local time). Referee will be Harald Lechner from Austria. It is interesting to note that Anorthosis is originaly from the city of Famagusta that today is located in the Turkish part of the island and because of that it currently plays its matches in the city of Larnaca.
