Right after the match against Hajduk,a dilemma emerged whether Horizont Turnovo’s star player Dejan Blazhevski will be eligible to play in the return leg.
UEFA Europa League rules are simple. Let’s quote article 22:
‘As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next
match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is
entitled to augment this punishment. For serious offences the punishment can
be extended to all UEFA competition categories.
22.02 In case of repeated cautions:
a) before the group stage, a player is suspended for the next competition
match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as after the
fifth caution’;
A player needs to accumulate three cards before a suspension – Blazhevski has only two so far, so he is eligible to play.
Let’s see examples from today’s round: Artūras Žulpa from Žalgiris already had two cards going in today’s match against St. Patricks, but that did not stop him playing 68 minutes today against Pyunik. Same thing happend with Marin Oršulić. Going in today’s match against Maccabi Haifa for his Xəzər, he already had two yellow cards – yet he played for one half.
Turnovo omitted Varelovski and Tenekedjiev today – as a coincidence, both players had accumulated two yellow cards in the first two matches. We can hope that this is a coincidence but it might just be a classic lack of knowledge.
