Ademi unlikely to face Luxembourg and Spain

The injury that Arijan Ademi suffered this past Saturday proved to be more serious than Dinamo Zagreb anticipated. As a matter of fact, after Saturday’s match, the club’s coach said that initial reports showed that Ademi should not miss any games, but that turned out to be wishful thinking.

MRI results on Ademi showed a partial rupture to his external oblique muscle of the abdomen. Dinamo’s doctor Tomislav Cerovečki noted that he expects Ademi to return in about 20 days.

As for how this timetable affects the national team, Macedonia plays Luxembourg in 18 days and Spain in 21 days. Those are both EURO 2016 qualifiers. It is important to note that the target date of 20 days is an educated guess by Cerovečki, not a certainly. Players can be fast or slow healers.

Manager Ljubinko Drulovic is expected to name his squad for those two games next week. We shall see whether Ademi is included, with the aim of probably being available for just the Spain qualifier. At the same time, Dinamo Zagreb may not give Macedonia permission to call-up Ademi. Returning from this type of injury to face an opponent like Spain is risky since that is a high-stress match against one of the best teams in the world. It could lead to re-aggravating the injury. So, although Ademi may want to play against Spain, Dinamo Zagreb will likely not make him available for Macedonia.

It’s a tough blow as defensive midfield is the most problematic position for Macedonia. However, injuries are part of the game and now other players will need to step up.
