Montenegro started better and created several early chances, but Macedonia gradually settled into the game. The visitors took the lead just before half-time when Savović found Kostić, who finished well past Djekov in the 44th minute.

Macedonia came out more aggressively after the break and quickly looked for an equaliser. Danеv came close, but his effort struck the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute. Velichkovski was brought down inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Admir Ljatifі made no mistake from the spot to make it 1:1.

Macedonia pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Mehmed coming closest when his header from close range missed the target.

Macedonia will conclude the qualifying campaign away to Sweden on 6 October.
