Makedonija GjP can escape relegation with a bizarre scenario

According to the Competition Regulations for the top flight published by FFM, although a good part of the media has declared it relegated, the Makedonija GjP team is mathematically not yet and can be saved with an incredible scenario in which it will need help from the relegated Rabotnichki, Tikvesh and Bashkimi.

The probability of that happening is very small, but mathematics gives them a chance.

With two rounds left in the season, the team from the Gjorche Petrov neighborhood, once a champion, has one foot in the second league, following in the footsteps of another former Skopje champion, Rabotnichki, who was relegated last round. Makedonija GjP is almost a second-league team. In theory, they have a chance to be saved, but in reality, it is unlikely that this will happen. However, as long as there is mathematics, there is also hope.

How can Makedonija GjP avoid relegation?

The former Jugokokta, as the old people of Gjorche Petrov remember it from Yugoslavia, must win the remaining two matches against Bashkimi away (neutral field) and Sileks at home. That is the first condition, which depends only on themselves.

Then the popular Lions should pray that Pelister loses both matches, away to Tikvesh and at home against Bashkimi. And Pelister will certainly give their all because not only does it avoid relegation with a point, but it also mathematically has a chance to avoid the play-out. But everything is in play as long as the mathematics says so.

And here it gets interesting. Even if the scenario in which Makedonija GjP achieves two wins and Pelister two losses comes true, the head-to-head duel is on the side of the Bitola based team (better goal difference of 4:3) and therefore, with the same number of points, the Lions are relegated again.

Pelister – Makedonija GjP 2:0
Pelister – Makedonija GjP 1:1
Makedonija GjP – Pelister 2:1

This is where the already relegated Rabotnichki comes into play, needing to win two of their last two matches against Shkupi away and Tikvesh at home. Article 107 of the Competition Regulations for the first league published in July 2025 (link here) states that when three or more teams have the same number of points, and a place is being decided that leads to something (in this case relegation or a play-out), a mini-table is made with the matches only between those three or more teams.

Article 107

1. An exception to determining the ranking in the table in the event of an equal number of points is made if it is a question of determining a ranking that decides for first place or a ranking in a higher level of competition, relegation from the league, moving to a higher or lower level of competition through a play-off match and participation in UEFA club competitions.
2. If the clubs have the same number of points in the final (Play off/Play out) table in the championship, the ranking is determined in the following way:
3. If two clubs have the same number of points, the team that has a better result in their mutual matches is higher.
4. If three or more clubs have the same number of points, an additional table is made that includes the results of the mutual matches played by the teams with the same number of points.
5. If the sum of the points won in the additional table is the same, the difference between the goals scored and the goals conceded is decisive.
6. If the difference between the goals scored and the goals conceded is the same, the greater number of away goals scored (when there are two clubs), or the greater number of goals scored when there are three or more clubs, decides.
7. If the number of goals scored cannot determine an advantage, then matches are played between the tied clubs, as follows:
a. two matches according to the double-cup system, if there are two clubs;
b. three matches, according to the single-point system, on a neutral field, if there are three clubs;
c. the required number of matches according to the single-cup system on a neutral field, if there are four or more clubs.
8. The body that runs the competition may make a decision if there is a request/consent from the interested clubs, and as an exception and upon the finding of the body itself if the integrity of the competition is at stake, instead of playing two or more matches as stated in the previous paragraph, the issue of placement shall be determined by playing one match, if there are two clubs.

Thus, the head-to-head matches of the club from Debar Maalo with Pelister and Makedonija GjP come into play here.

Rabotnichki – Pelister 3:3
Pelister – Rabotnichki 4:1
Rabotnichki – Pelister 3:0

Makedonija GjP – Rabotnichki 2:1
Makedonija GjP – Rabotnichki 3:1
Rabotnichki – Makedonija GjP 0:0

According to the mutual results, the mini table looks like this:

Mini-table for possible relegation scenario

1116321862
28622211101
356123912-3

With this scenario, Pelister moves to the second league, while Makedonija GjP will enter the play-out.

In reality, it is difficult to happen, but theoretically possible.
