Goran Pandev was shown a direct red card for throwing an elbow in the Serie A clash between Genoa and Lazio.
A nightmarish return to the Stadio Olimpico for Goran Pandev. That venue, which is very familiar to Pandev, hosted the Round 5 league game between Lazio and Genoa. Goran was very motivated, considering the kind of exit he had from Lazio back in 2009. He can’t stand Lazio president Claudio Lotito who he feels tried to ruin his career. The feeling, though, is mutual since Lotito also despises Pandev. Both sides had court battles and left on ugly terms.
Returning to the game on Wednesday, Pandev was booed constantly by the Lazio fans in attendance. Any time he touched the ball, he would hear whistles. The supporters, who once cheered him loudly for all of his goals, have also turned on Pandev after he left the club.
This is not the first time that Pandev has played against Lazio since 2009. He featured as a visiting player at the Stadio Olimpico with both Inter and Napoli, but today’s appearance marked a return after he spent last season in Turkey with Galatasaray.
Pandev was fielded in attack and played until the 85th minute when the elbowing incident occurred. Goran extended his left elbow and hit Brazilian defender Maurício in the face. The referee immediately took out the red card, something that Pandev couldn’t believe. However, replays did show a blatant elbow on Pandev’s behalf.
By him receiving a direct red card, that means that the disciplinary committee of the Italian federation will review the incident. If they deem that the elbow was intentional, then Pandev could be facing a multi-game suspension.
