All 5 teams from the 9th Qualification group for WC 2010 have used 20th of August to play friendlies that will serve as last preparations before the start of the qualification tournament.
Scotland, our first opponent, played a friendly match against Northern Ireland. It ended all square with a scoreless draw. Northern Ireland played something more than 30 minutes with a player less after one player was sent off in the 58th minute. However, they even had the chance to win this match, but Scotland's keeper saved a penalty kick. This has been Scotland's manager George Burley third game since he took charge of the Scottish national team but he still haven't won a match. When we are talking about Scottish managers, it is worth noting that ex-Scottish manager Craig Brown (in charge from 1993-2002) was in Luxembourg to watch the friendly match between the hosts and our national team.
Netherlands, our 10th of Sep opponent, visited Russia yesterday and though they were leading for big part of the match, in the end they had to satisfy themselves with a 1-1 score.
Norway hosted Republic of Ireland yesterday and they did drew as well. The final score of this match was 1-1 after they were down by 1.
Iceland hosted Azerbaijan and they have finished the list of group 9 teams who drew on yesterday's friendlies.Azerbaijan took the lead, but 10 minutes later Iceland equalized and the final score of this match was, once again, 1-1.
This means that besides Macedonia, none of the other group teams managed to win yesterday, but we have to keep in mind that Luxembourg is a weaker opponent comparing to the other teams.
