After the last two editions being played in Strumica, the cup final gets back in the capital. Strumica was once again an option as well as Kochani who backed by Osogovo officially announced its candidacy. However, the FFM brought a decision the final to be played in Skopje. It will be the 20th final to be played in the capital. Skopje does have the biggest stadium, but the local fans have shown on numerous occasions that they are not interested in domestic football.
It will kick-off at 18.30 CET at Macedonia’s biggest stadium who once again got a new name. After being called Gradski Skopje for decades, from 2009 it was called National Arena Philip II of Macedon in honor of one of the greatest Macedonians that ever walked this lands, king Philip II father of Alexander the Great. However, a month ago the government decided to rename the stadium in honor of singer Toshe Proeski who in 2007 manager to gather 50.000 people at his concert, which is a record attendance at the stadium. Proeski tragically died in a road accident in Croatia later the same year.
For Macedonija GjP this will be their third final. So far they have one trophy when in 2006 they beat Shkendija with 3:2 and have one defeat when they lost 6:5 on penalties by Rabotnichki in 2009. For Akademija Pandev this final is their first ever. Regardless of the final placement in the league, the winner will secure a spot in the Europa League qualifiers this summer.
