World Cup 2010 Qualifications have started and they started good for Macedonia. With a 1-0 win over Scotland, Macedonia has something to build upon when they take Netherlands on Wednesday.
Ilco Naumoski's rebound strike brought Macedonia 3 precious points and first place on the table after the first set of matches from the 9th qualification group. Macedonia beat Scotland and started the new camapign in best possible way. But, that match is already a history. Our players have another obstacle that they should pass right now. And, possibly, this is the highest obstacle. On Wednesday, at Gradski Stadium in Skopje, Netherlands are visiting Macedonia. It is no secret that Netherlands are the favorites for topping the group. Being 4th in the world according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola ranking list is something that they should be proud of. But of course, that is something we should respect, but not fear. The challenge is only bigger and the wish for victory is stronger once the opponent is 'stronger'. Though Netherlands didnt played a qualifying match, they did played a friendly match on Saturday. They lost 1-2 against Australia. They played with 10 men for more than 45 minutes after goalkeeper Stekelenburg committed a foul on Kennedy and was sent off. Robben and Sneijder missed that match. Looking in past matches between Macedonia and Netherlands, we go back to the 2006 World Cup qualifications tournament when Macedonia held Netherlands to draw two times. A 2-2 in Skopje and scoreless draw in Amsterdam were the only two matches where Netherlands didn't got the maximum points. In every other of the 10 matches, they noted victories. On Wednesday, we will see Oranje coach Bert van Marwijk first competitive game in charge for the Dutch team. Netherlands are considered as favorites by the bookmakers and 1.40 is the approximate price that bookies pay for their win, while Macedonia are once again underdogs - but this time big underdogs. 7 times the investment is what you can get if you bet on Macedonia and they celebrate once again. This match won't be played during Skopje's enormous heat as it was the case with the Scotland game, after floodlights will be installed just for this match. Kick-off is scheduled for 20.30 CET and TV Sitel will be broadcasting this match live.Main referee will be Grzegorz Gilewski from Poland and his assistants will be Maciej Wierzbowski and Rafal Rostkowski, both from Poland.
